Bowl for Kids’ Sake

With the generous support of credit union members, friends, and family, the Winslow Community FCU bowling team helped to make a difference in the lives of local children this week when we participated in the annual Big Brothers Big Sisters Bowl for Kid’s Sake fundraising event.  We loved supporting such a wonderful program, but enjoyed lots of fun, laughter and a wee bit of friendly competition, too!  We were a stylish bunch with our fabulous and colorful Big Brothers Big Sisters t-shirts.  Loud cheers rang throughout the bowling alley whether the ball hit the gutter or landed a strike.  We quickly learned that the youngest members of our team, Caleb and Joella, were more skilled at bowling than the adults!  Guess we’ll need to schedule some practice sessions way in advance of next year’s event!

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Mid-Maine helps children to realize their potential and build their future. Their unique array of one-on-one mentoring programs helps to change lives for the better, forever!   BBBS serves communities in Kennebec, Knox, Lincoln, Penobscot, Somerset, and Waldo counties.

Children are carefully matched with caring, screened adult mentors who share a few hours with their “little” each week.   Every match is unique.  Getting together does not require a special occasion or expensive activity—just a few hours every week doing things the Little and Big already enjoy from shooting hoops or playing board games to simply walking and talking, or just hanging out.

BBBS mentoring works because a screened, trained volunteer is paired with a child based on their compatibility. Together they receive professional match support as their relationship grows.  Also, the schedule can be flexible to meet the needs of both the mentor and the youth.  Some Bigs meet their Littles on the weekend — others get together after school.  There’s almost no one so busy that they can’t find a way to fit in a few hours a month.
